Unless children start by getting a general understanding of the broad sweep of British and European history - ideally from the fall of the Western Roman Empire onwards - it is impossible to get any value from the obsessive concentration, in isolation, on the Tudors, Nazis etc. Some familiarity is essential with main events and developments, including the High Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Age of Discovery, the Reformation, the Enlightenment etc. if what follows is to have any real meaning. There is no sense teaching about the 20th Century without teaching first about the Age of Revolutions, Unifications of German and Italy, Peter the Great's modernisation of Russia, the rise of Prussia, etc.etc.etc.
Antoine Vannerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00490972848447907013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6609336542134646427.post-79676386399081396512014-01-04T21:11:22.980+00:002014-01-04T21:11:22.980+00:00Exciting times ahead indeed Paula! When I was a child in Manchester, UK, we learnt about the 'Ancient Britons' (these days we call them Celts!) in year one, then wended our way through the Romans, the Anglo-Saxons and Danes and then 1066 and all that. I left to come to Oz half way through year four but the stuff I'd learnt in history stayed with me, to be complemented by the history of white settlement in Oz and later, in high school, the ancient history of the Middle East and the history of Britain from 1066 - WWII and a bit of Asian history. Sadly, the young people I know today seem to have a bit of a grasp of Australian history but not much else.

And Latin should be compulsory, too :-) (Mumblemumblebloodymoderneducationsystemgrumblegrumble.)Satima Flavellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17427849961195148899noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6609336542134646427.post-83743354062930168942013-08-30T22:00:25.766+01:002013-08-30T22:00:25.766+01:00Thanks Sue, I'm glad that you and Jools got th...Thanks Sue, I'm glad that you and Jools got the point that I was making. Honestly, I've moved from shaking my head in wonder at the Facebook shenanigans over this to now simply feeling embarrassed for those caught up in provoking and sustaining the extreme Team Richard/Team Henry Medieval Middle School Mentality partisanship. History will never cease to fascinate, to be sure, but there are far healthier and more enjoyable ways to relate to the past than by picking sides in a war that's been over for some 500-odd years.Sue Morrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12306993760086557571noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6609336542134646427.post-2811126488857414582013-08-28T21:56:05.876+01:002013-08-28T21:56:05.876+01:00I don't think Richard was quite the general yo...I don't think Richard was quite the general you think he was.
